Winter Walking

Guided winter walking
These one or two day winter walking holidays
are suitable for those who have attended a winter skills course but who
haven’t had much chance to get out into the hills since. Also, a great
opportunity to brush up on navigation skills and bag a few Munros.
Starting from Aviemore, we head away from
Cairngorm to the Monadliaths, the Laggan hills, Creag Meagaidh or further
afield depending on conditions.
Navigation using map & compass & GPS
navigation courses
Our one and two day basic navigation
courses teach the basic use of the map and compass on the hill. We
cover navigation techniques – using handrails, collecting points and
tick-off features, aiming off, timing and pacing and relocation skills.
Also, time will be spent considering contour lines and how they relate to
the land features we see around us.
We also run GPS navigation courses for
hillwalkers, skiers and climbers looking at the basic use of GPS. We cover
how the GPS system works, correct GPS set up for the UK and abroad, how to
create and use marks, waypoints and routes as well as using the "tracback"
and "goto" features on the hill. In the classroom, we can organise an
introduction to using mapping software to make GPS route planning easier.
